What is MCH

MCH is short for “mean corpuscular hemoglobin.” It is the average amount in each of your red blood cells of a protein called hemoglobin, which carries oxygen throughout the body.

You may learn about HCM when you have a blood test called a CBC (complete blood count). This test measures different parts of your blood, including red blood cells and white blood cells. Doctors use information from the CBC to calculate your HCM.

A measure similar to MCH is something that doctors call “mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration” (MCHC). MCHC checks the average amount of hemoglobin in a group of red blood cells.

Heading

  • The normal range for MCH is between 27.5 and 33.2 picograms (pg).
  • MCH is calculated by dividing the amount of hemoglobin in a given volume of blood by the number of red blood cells present.
  • A low MCH value usually indicates the presence of iron deficiency anemia.
  • Low MCH can be caused by a genetic condition called thalassemia.
  • A calculated MCH value above 33.2 pg is considered high MCH. This means that there is a greater amount of hemoglobin present per red blood cell.
  • The high MCH value can often be caused by anemia due to a deficiency of B vitamins, particularly B-12 and folic acid.
